derek’s experience

Imagine the desperation of living on the streets with two young children. This was Derek's reality until he was referred to Way Finders. We were able to help him find a short-term housing solution and a temporary job. Several years later, with a long-term job and some unfinished business to tend to, he returned to Way Finders. Derek had always dreamed of owning a home and with out help he started to make his dream a reality. We provided financial education and credit counseling while Derek did the heavy lifting. Today, he and his sons have a permanent address and a very bright future.

You own your home.

You may be facing some challenges. Or you may want to sharpen your budgeting skills or learn more about home maintenance.

There is so much to know about owning a home—budgeting, repairs, insurance and more. There are also a number of common challenges facing many homeowners. For example, you may need costly modifications for a loved one with special needs. Your home may have hazardous lead paint. Or you may have trouble paying your mortgage.

Buying a home is easier than you think. You can become a certified first-time homebuyer with Way Finders as we cover finding, financing, and purchasing a home and provide you with one-on-one counseling. As a CHAPA, HUD, and NeighborWorks certified organization, completion of our first-time homebuyers workshop may qualify you for down payment assistance and first-time homebuyer mortgage programs.

Unsure if you are ready to become a first-time homebuyer? Take our 4 question, Homebuyer Readiness Test and we’ll provide a recommendation on where to begin.

Francisco got hurt on the job and after several months, couldn’t pay the rent. He and his three-year old daughter ended up in a Way Finders’ temporary shelter. While he recovered from his injury, he took advantage of job readiness training and landed a full time job. He and his daughter now live in their own apartment in a development built and managed by Way Finders. Life feels much more secure in a safe, affordable, and well maintained home. Being a single parent always has its challenges but less so living in a Way Finders’ development.
